Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has dismissed any suggestion his government is anti-Chinese as outrageous.

The People's Daily newspaper in China has accused Australia's media of slandering Chinese who live and study in Australia and Beijing has lodged a complaint over Mr Turnbull's comments on Chinese influence.

But Mr Turnbull has told the A-B-C's Q and A program his government doesn't hold a prejudice against China.

But campaigning for the by-election in the Sydney seat of Bennelong, Labor candidate Kristina Keneally said voters are already expressing concern about the government's comments on China.
