In a video message posted on Facebook, Mr Turnbull has paid tribute to police, fire fighters and paramedics, as well as nurses and doctors working over the long weekend.

He also thanked those combatting natural disasters.

"I want to pay special tribute to our emergency service workers who've supported our resilient and courageous communities in the Northern Territory, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales, where cyclones, floods and fires have done their worst. But brought out Australian character at it's very best."

Opposition leader Bill Shorten has also thanked emergency services and those working over the weekend in his own Easter message.
