About 300 homes and businesses will be inundated by floodwaters in the central Queensland city of Rockhampton when the Fitzroy River reaches its flood peak about midday, authorities say.
The river has been rising slowly for several days and by early this morning had reached a level of 8.7 metres.
It is expected to rise to 9 metres at its peak.
Senior hydrologist Charlotte Faulkner said the peak level would hold until the weekend.
Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow said the slow rise had provided authorities and residents with extra time to prepare.
