Attorney-General George Brandis says the Senate procedures committee should consider changes to the parliamentary dress code after Senator Pauline Hanson wore a burqua in the chamber last week.

Mr Brandis says the committee should look at whether it's appropriate to use religious clothing in that way.

There are currently no formal rules about what senators can wear, with clothing choices left up to individual judgement.

Mr Brandis, who says Ms Hanson's stunt was "appalling", told Sky News the chamber dealt with the incident effectively.
