Finance Minister Mathias Cormann has dismissed any suggestion the government is recognising multiple marriages.
It follows claims that Centrelink is paying spousal benefits to the wives of polygamous Muslim men.
News Corp Australia reports former prime minister Tony Abbott called for action after learning about the issue, only to be told that it would cost more to pay recipients the single parent benefit.
But Senator Cormann has told Sky News ... suggesting the government endorses polygamy is ridiculous.
