New South Wales' longest period of air pollution is set to continue, with severe bushfire conditions predicted across much of the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology forescast heavy smoke from fires burning around Sydney will linger until at least Saturday.

fires continue to burn across New South Wales, with at least 65 uncontained.

Total fire bans are in place today for the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, Illawarra Shoalhaven, Far South Coast, Monaro Alpine, Southern Ranges, Central Ranges, Northern Slopes and North Western areas.

 

 

In the meantime, 

Firefighters in Queensland have spent the night tackling a bushfire in the state's southeast, which forced residents to flee.

Part of the Gore Highway was closed as the fire burnt out of control southwest of Millmerran, a town not far from Toowoomba.

Residents of Forrest Ridge were told to seek shelter an those in nearby Cypress Gardens to evacuate as 24 fire crews attempted to contain the blaze.
