German police have used water cannons and pepper spray to disperse protesters in the German city of Hamburg ahead of the Group of 20, or G20, summit.

More than 100,000 protesters are expected in the city for the summit, scheduled for tonight (07/07) and tomorrow (08/07) night.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has held talks with German chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of the summit.

They discussed countering what they termed terrorism and radicalisation, as well as cyber threats, and reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris climate-change agreement.

They also expressed their commitment to an open, rules-based trading system.

Mr Turnbull says he also expects North Korea's latest missile launch to be a major discussion point for world leaders.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, also in Germany, has told Sky News he expects trade to be a key issue at the summit, too.
