British Prime Minister Theresa May says that both the U-K and the European Union are looking for a "comprehensive free trade agreement" as they negotiate the former's departure from the 28-member bloc.

A letter signed by Ms May was delivered overnight to the European Council President Donald Tusk notifying the E-U of Britain's intention to leave.

It gives Britain two years to complete exit negotiations.

Ms May says ensuring access to the European single market will be a key priority.

Australia looks forward to negotiate a free trade deal with the U-K.

The Australian government says it is looking forward to negotiating a free trade deal with the U-K, now it has formally begun the process of leaving the European Union.

Trade Minister Steve Ciobo says he is hoping to gain better access to the U-K market for Australian agricultural exporters -- and negotiate lower prices for Australians on UK-manufactured goods are cheaper.

He has told the A-B-C, he has big hopes for a bilateral agreement.
