Australian singer Dami Im says she hopes her performance at the Eurovision song contest created a good image of Australia.

Australia's Dami Im narrowly missed out on winning Eurovision, but her song Sound of Silence received a warm embrace from the crowd.

Im was the jury's favourite and led the votes for most of the count.

But Ukraine's Jamala and her song 1944 tugged the heart strings ..and dominated the public vote for Eurovision 2016(twenty-sixteen).

Ukraine took the win with 534 points from Australia on 511.

The crowd erupted as Jamala was called to the stage .. thanking the crowd and up to 200 million television viewers.

Russia's Sergey Lazarev, who'd been favoured to win, came in third.

Australia's Dami Im says her second placing may give her more opportunities to release music and tour in Europe, with her song already charting in some countries.

Speaking to S-B-S, Im says she loved performing 'Sound of Silence' and thanked the crowd, which included a big group of Australians.

Im, who moved to Australia from South Korea at the age of nine, says she hopes her participation in Eurovision created a good image of Australia as a place that accepted immigrants like her.

But one thing is sure .. the event won over the massive crowd that packed the venue.

Swedish hosts Petra Mede and Mans Zelmerlow cracked gags and made digs at other countries throughout the contest.

And the winner was lost for words ..saying the only word she can use to describe the contest is "amazing".
