Victoria will push the Commonwealth to introduce new security measures, including a specialist federal police squad based in airports, to respond to potential terrorist threats.

Police Minister Lisa Neville said the Victorian Government would use the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Hobart on Friday to lobby for measures including:

  • the Australian Federal Police (AFP) providing tactical support to help authorities respond to threats at airports
  • giving the state greater access to telecommunications technology during major events to improve safety
  • better access to defence facilities for training
