Victoria has legalised the ride-sharing service Uber.
From 2018, a one-dollar levy will be imposed on all commercial legal trips.
It will replace licence fees and help compensate taxi operators, and will be reviewed after several months to determine when the state government has recouped the amount paid in compensation.
The government says the reforms will abolish up-front taxi licence fees, which can cost up to 23 thousand dollars, and create a level playing field for taxis to compete with ride-sharing services.
