The Bureau of Meteorology is warning that temperatures will remain in high 30s and low forties across parts of Australia's southeast across the weekend.

Total fire bans are in place for much of Victoria today (19/01), while severe fire danger warnings have been issued for New South Wales and Victoria.

Dean Stewart, from the Bureau of Meteorology Victoria, says the weather has heightened the fire danger in the state.

Authorities have also urged people to keep an eye out for toddlers and pets locked in cars during the extreme heat.

Speaking on the ABC, Victoria's Emergency Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley has urged people to ring Triple Zero if they see anyone locked in a car.
