“Republic must come after Queen's reign” - Malcolm Turnbull

The Prime Minister has reinforced his position that Australia cannot become a republic until after the Queen's reign. Malcolm Turnbull, who was the former chair of the Australian Republican Movement (ARM) made the comment during an address to the organisation's 25th anniversary dinner. Opposition leader Bill Shorten has affirmed support for the move. Mr Turnbull admits a republic is less an issue now than it was at the time of the last referendum in 1999. The man who helped found the Australian Republican Movement in 1991 was back to address around 300 of its supporters at a dinner in the Great Hall at Sydney University.
