Recently Human rights watch released a report regarding challenges faced by transgender community in Sri Lanka. SBS Sinhalese program interviewed Dr. Visakesa Chandrasekaran (Human rights activist based in Australia) and Bhoomi Harendran (Transgeder activist from Sri Lanka) regarding the topic.
Dr. Chandrasekaran talked about the Policy makers duty when it comes to preserve transgender communitys rights. More over he mentioned that its important to give them a value in the countrys constitution to eradicate discrimination for LGBT community in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan transgender activist Bhoomi Harendran mentioned that things have been improved during last 6 years related to Transgender rights in Sri Lanka. According to Bhoomi, platform has been created to talk about transgender issues in Sri Lanka because of the various health programs. Also Bhoomi mentioned that there are lots of things should be done to preserve transgender rights in Sri Lanka.
