Australian voters could be asked to show identification before casting their ballot at the next election under a new bill proposed by the Federal Government.

The bill aims to clamp down on voter fraud, but is facing fierce criticism from Labor and the Greens.

It's been met with accusations of bringing Donald Trump's America to Australian democracy.

Labor also claims the laws are unnecessary since there haven't been many fraudsters in Australia in recent years.

It could be unfair though as the laws could exclude people from participating on polling day, especially those from marginalised groups.

And as Zuzana Kovačičová reports, there are questions over whether it's really necessary.
