Helena Leber has been active within the Slovenian community in Melbourne for decades. She also worked as a broadcaster for the Slovenian program on 3EA and SBS for 20 years alongside her late husband, Ivo Leber. Helena was actively involved in the movement for Slovenian Independence in Australia in the early 1990s and is a very proud and patriotic Slovenian! She spoke about the late former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and his huge impact on Australian politics. The Hawke-Keating government also granted diplomatic recognition to Slovenia and Croatia in January 1992, making Australia the first country outside of Europe to recognise the newly independent states.
