Miro Smrdel passed away on Friday, 9 August in Greystanes, NSW. Miro, aged 74 was born on January 30, 1945 in the village of Trnje, near the town of Pivka in Slovenia. Miro is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mira and daughter Tania. Mira and Miro were married in the St Raphael's Slovenian Church in Merrylands on January 6, 1973, just after the church was built. His wife Mira is a former president of the Slovenian Association Sydney, and daughter Tania also has been actively involved within the wider Slovenian Community Down Under. It must be noted that Tania has worked as a Slovenian radio broadcaster on SBS for almost 20 years as well as being the Executive Producer for SBS Slovenian for 11 years. Miro was a softly spoken man with a heart of gold! He was a good husband and father who loved his family dearly. His friendly and genuine nature won him the admiration and respect of many people within the Slovenian Community. Miro's funeral and requiem Mass was held at the St Raphael's Slovenian Church in Merrylands, the same church where Miro and Mira were married almost 47 years earlier. He was laid to rest in the St Raphael's Slovenian Cemetery in Rookwood with his wake being held at the Slovenian Association Sydney where the Smrdel family were actively involved. We extend our sincerest condolences to wife Mira, daughter Tania, Miro's brother Ivan and sister Stana in Slovenia, his brother Frank who lives in Sydney and Miro's many friends who were fortunate enough to know and respect him. May he rest in God's peace.
