American yacht, Comanche, shine

American yacht, Comanche, has taken the line honours in the 71st Sydney to Hobart yacht race. It's the first international contender in over a decade to cross the finish line first.

Low winds around the mouth of the Derwent River also contributed to a very late finish time of two days, nine hours, 58 minutes and 30 seconds.

The yacht staged an incredible comeback after rough seas saw it lose its dagger board and part of its rudder.

The American skipper of super-maxi, Ken Read, says they almost called it quits.

He said; "So that's when we said 'oh, we're done' and we stopped and we took all the sails down and then we actually started kind of drifting back towards Sydney and then all of a sudden I see the tools come out with these guys, that's usually a good sign that they have an idea."

Now that Comanche has tied up line honours, attention has turned to who will take out handicap honours for the overall victory.

Comanche is still in the running to win both line and handicap honours.
