May's gamble backfires

Many political commentators have described it as an unnecessary election, whilst UK Labour candidate Jeremy Corbyn described it as "an election called in order to assert Prime Minister Theresa May's authority."

The Prime Minister went into the election with a lead of over 16% on Labour's Jeremy Corbyn, who many political analysts and parts of UK mainstream media condemned as un electable.

Hence after weeks of campaigns around the United Kingdom, voters and analysts were keen to see if predictions made lived up to their expectations, with the two main candidates seemingly confident about their chances of forming a government.

Polls released a few days before election day, revealed a worrying shift for the conservatives and the Prime Minister, with the opposition leader rapidly gaining ground with predictions swinging towards an upset in the election results.

As counting of votes began, the Labour party managed to pick up seats which the Conservatives were targeting and even took seats from Conservative candidates, as the mood quickly shifted from having a big majority which the Conservatives were expecting to seriously considering deals with minor parties to help the Conservatives form a government.

A hung parliament was declared by day break, with speculations growing of a potential resignation of Prime Minister Theresa May.

In the meantime Labour's Jeremy Corbyn is celebrating a better than expected outcome of the election, with some now expecting him to form a minority government, should Theresa May fall short of required numbers to form a government.
