After a six-week winter break, federal politicians have returned to a dramatic week of Canberra politics.

A relatively unknown senator called for a ban on Muslim immigration, and the Coalition's signature energy policy gained cautious approval from the party room.

Each matter caused a ruckus, one louder than the other.

While Coalition members can, in theory, vote as their conscience demands on legislation, it would be a bad look for the Government if some cross the floor on the energy guarantee.

The legislation is expected to come before parliament in the current two-week session after it gets final approval from the states and territories.

And that was the week in politics.
