With just four more parliamentary sitting days left for the year in Canberra, the Morrison government is trying to ward off embarrassing challenges to its authority on the floor of parliament.

It's been a week of lows for the Coalition following the loss of one of its female MPs to the crossbench and threats of others possibly doing the same.

The chaos of the week in Canberra prompted Treasurer Josh Frydenberg to cancel plans to accompany the Prime Minister at the G20 leaders' summit in Argentina.

Scott Morrison will spend the weekend there meeting his counterparts before racing home in time for the final four parliamentary sitting days of the year.
