Facebook will ban foreign political advertising and introduce fact checking during the federal election.
The social media giant has come under fire for not doing enough to limit foreign interference, especially in US and European elections in recent years.
The head of the Australian Strategic Institute's Cyber Security Centre Fergus Hanson is questioning whether the ad ban goes far enough.
He says fake news is attacking the core of democracy and more measures need to be taken to protect voters from election meddling and foreign interference.
