Rwandans around the world are gathering to begin a solemn commemoration of the lives of 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus, who were murdered during the Rwandan genocide.

A three-month-killing spree began 25 years ago during Rwanda's civil war, which claimed many lives and displaced many people.

Sunday's ceremony marks the beginning of a week of events to honor the dead. As many as 10,000 people were killed daily with seventy per cent of the minority Tutsi population wiped out, and over 10 per cent of the total Rwandan population before fighting ended in July 1994.

SBS Swahili attended a service organised by members of the NSW Rwandan Community, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the genocide, here's what some of the survivors and leaders of the community told us.
