Eight Melbourne mayors have come together in a show of support for the state's South Sudanese-Australian communities following what they say is a barrage of negative media and political commentary.

They say the threat of violent crime by African-Australians as a whole is being grossly overstated and crime is actually decreasing.

Youth Activating Youth director Ahmed Hassan, says the solution is re-engaging the marginalised in education and employment.
