The reign of Omar al-Bashir as Sudan's seventh president is over.


The military has taken the man who has ruled Sudan since 1989 into custody after an internal revolt against him.

But what will come next for Sudan is causing as much anxiety for the Sudanese people as what has just been removed.

The British government is also calling for a quicker transition to civilian rule.

But, although the situation will continue to be watched closely, what the Sudanese people want, and what they get, could be two very different things.

And that could mean the troubles in a long-troubled country may not yet be over.
