Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce resigned after a sexual-harassment allegation against him, the latest twist in a two-week saga over his position.

And former prime minister Tony Abbott started criticising Government frontbenchers after they dismissed his suggestions Australia's immigration levels should be cut.

The week's proceedings mean the Government's solid start to the year is now gone.

Its political momentum has evaporated amid the scandal and the ensuing political bickering.
