The Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory has heard how a teenage detainee was denied food and water as punishment, and forced to defecate into a pillow case.

Dylan Voller is a former inmate at the Don Dale youth detention centre in Darwin and one in a number of detainees whose treatment at the hands of prison guards sparked the national inquiry.

The 19-year-old is a key witness after media reports showed him being tear-gassed, and restrained in a chair with a hood over his head.
