NEWS UPDATE: Labor tried to pass a 12-month extension, but the crossbench would only agree to a shorter delay before millions of Australians are automatically signed up for a digital health profile.

The deadline for Australians to opt out of My Health Record has been extended until the end of January after the Senate voted in favour of a delay.

Minister defends My Health database security amid hacking fears

The three month opt-out period has begun for the My Health Record database amid digital security and privacy concerns.

The government has opened a three-month opt-out window, ending on October 15, for people who do not want a record created for them.

After this date an e-health record will be created for every Australia by default.
