New Year’s Eve weather: What to expect around Australia

Millions of people will gather in capital cities around the country to farewell 2018.

Brisbane

The sun will likely shine on Brisbane through the day and a light breeze should fan the city in the afternoon.

However, it is a different story in far north Queensland.

People are being urged to prepare emergency kits because a tropical low with damaging winds is dumping buckets of torrential rain that could cause flash flooding.

The weather bureau says the monsoon trough is very active and there is the potential for a cyclone to develop near Cape York Peninsula by New Year’s Eve or January 1.
