Victorian coastlines will be monitored by helicopters after more than 30 sharks were spotted along the Great Ocean Road and a surf beach on the Bellarine Peninsula.

A Life Saving Victoria helicopter sighted 12 sharks west of Anglesea and up to 20 sharks near Fairhaven on Christmas Day.

The sharks ranged between 1.5 metres and 3.5 metres in length.

The sharks were spotted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter during flights including around Aireys Inlet-Fairhaven, Anglesea and Collendina, near Ocean Grove.

A statement from Fisheries Victoria, released on Sunday night, urged Victorians wanting to swim at the beach to use patrolled beaches and to swim between the flags.

"(Today) the helicopter will attend the sites to review the situation and provide updated information," the statement said.

Beachgoers are urged to download the VicEmergency app.
