Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is urging the Turkish government to be respectful while pursuing sweeping new powers after claiming victory in a referendum.

Ms Bishop said while there was yet to be an official declaration, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan had claimed victory in Sunday's referendum and initial results looked to provide him a mandate for the proposed reforms.

"I hope the Turkish government takes the opportunity to be inclusive and to be respectful of differing views in taking the reforms ahead if indeed they get a mandate to do so," she told ABC radio on Tuesday.
