An Australian has been killed and another injured in a landmine explosion during a joint training exercise on a military base in Cambodia.

A Cambodian was also killed and two others injured in the blast in the province of Kampong Speu, 50km west of the capital, Phnom Penh, said provincial police chief Sam Samoun.

"We don't know what happened yet, all we know is that there was an explosion," he said, adding that the two Australians were in their 40s and that Cambodian soldiers made up the rest of the victims.

The Australians were working as military trainers, the ABC reports.

The Cambodian army is investigating the blast, said defence ministry spokesman Chhum Sucheat.

Comment is being sought from the Australian Defence Force and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
