Two explosions outside Istanbul's Besiktas football stadium on Saturday evening local time have killed 13 people, according to security sources.

One of two explosions that struck outside an Istanbul soccer stadium on Saturday night was thought to have been caused by a suicide bomber, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters in comments broadcast live on television.

The suspected suicide bomber struck in Macka park, next to the Vodafone Arena, home to Istanbul's Besiktas soccer team, while the second explosion hit directly outside the stadium, Soylu said, describing the attack as a "cruel plot".

He says the attack targeted a riot police bus, which he earlier announced had wounded nearly 20 police officers.

A Reuters witness says officers have been seriously wounded in the blast.

Turkish security forces detonated a suspicious package outside Istanbul stadium after the earlier blasts, broadcaster NTV said.

It added 38 people had been wounded but gave no details of any death toll.

Turkish soccer team Bursaspor, which had been competing earlier in the evening, said none of its fans appeared to have been injured in an explosion outside one of Istanbul's main stadiums hours after the end of a match on Saturday.

"We have contacted our fan groups. There appear to be no injuries among our fans. We wish injured citizens a quick recovery," Bursaspor said in a statement on its Twitter account.

Ambulances and fire trucks were immediately dispatched and police have cordoned off some traffic around the stadium, they said.

Reports say it happened two hours after a football match.

CNN Turkey reported there was also an explosion heard near Istanbul's central Taksim Square.
