Turkey’s newly appointed ambassador to Australia has taken up his post. Korhan Karakoç, who previously served as the deputy director of the Middle East Office at the Turkish Foreign Ministry, said his experience at this post would allow him to better articulate Ankara’s policies in the region to his Australian interlocutors. In an interview to SBS Turkish Radio, Karakoç said Jerusalem’s status was a redline for Turkey. He said criticism by the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation, which is chaired by Turkey, was behind Canberra’s decision to reassess its earlier policy of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital before qualifying it as “East Jerusalem.”
