Turkish Parliament officially began to operate on April the 23rd 1920. In 1924, the founder and first president of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk declared April the 23rd as the 'National Sovereignty Day'. Five years later Ataturk also awarded the day to the Turkish children. Now, April 23rd is celebrated as 'Turkish National Sovereignty and Children's Day'.
