A group of 19 journalists and staff members of the last prominent independent newspaper in Turkey are on trial in Istanbul, accused of aiding terrorist organisations. It is part of the government's growing crackdown against its opponents. The country is now the biggest jailer of journalists in the world, with 178 reporters behind bars. The trial comes a week after Turkey marked the first anniversary of a failed coup, with some hailing that day as the triumph of democracy and others denouncing the crackdown.
