July 15, 2016 coup attempt remains a traumatic experience for many in Turkey. More than 300 died and 2,100 were injured during the coup attempt. In the days following July 15, 2016, there were “democracy watch” demonstrations across the country where hundreds of thousands of people condemned the coup attempt. Since then, July 15 is marked in Turkey as the democracy and national solidarity day. Tens of thousands of people, including members of the judiciary and the military, were detained, arrested and/or fired in investigations following the coup attempt. Most were affiliated with the Gulen Movement or its leader Fetullah Gulen. Thousands fled overseas, with hundreds seeking asylum. Gulen is accused by Turkey of being the chief instigator of the coup, a claim many countries abroad find less than persuasive. In Turkey, the movement is categorised as a terrorist group.
