Australia's consumer watchdog has launched an investigation after it was revealed faulty Takata airbags in cars have been replaced with similarly flawed products.

The bags are at the centre of the largest global recall in automotive history, which involves about 100 million vehicles.

The products have been linked to eighteen deaths around the world, including that of a Sydney man last week.

While urging drivers not to panic, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims, says they should get replacement airbags checked as soon as possible, with some sixty models fitted with them.
