In a brief hearing on January 23, 1818, the An Giang provincial government declared extremely heavy charges against four Hoa Hao Buddhists accusing them of "propaganda against the state" under Article 88 Penal Code


The total sentence for these four followers was up to 31 years in prison and 12 years of probation. In particular, Mr. Vuong Van Thu (born in 1969) was sentenced to the highest sentence of 12 years in prison, his son, Vuong Thanh Thuan (b. 1990), was sentenced to 7 years in prison, two twin brothers Nguyen Nhat Truong, Nguyen Van Thuong (born 1985) and 6 years in prison.

Each person is subject to an additional 3 years of local probation after his / her term in prison.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dien, President of Pure Buddhist Hoa Hao Buddhist Association, responded with a verdict that he called unscrupulous.
