What inspires a Quentin Tarantino film? With his latest movie, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, fans will get a chance to hear directly from the director, when a one-of-a-kind film series kicks off on SBS World Movies on August 12.

Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, premiering at The Melbourne International Film Festival before a release around Australia on August 15, steps back to 1969 Los Angeles with TV star and would-be movie star Rick Dalton  (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his long-time stunt double and friend Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt).

It’s Tarantino’s tribute to the golden age of American movie-making, and in the 'Quentin Tarantino Presents' special collection on SBS World Movies – a series curated by the director – he shares how nine films from that era inspired his new release.

Like Tarantino, the list is far from predictable: the 1969 romantic comedy Cactus Flower (for which Goldie Hawn won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for best supporting actress) lines up on the list alongside a western (Gunman’s Walk) and a secret agent thriller (Hammerhead).

Each, Tarantino says, had a specific influence on Once Upon a Time.

“I’m thrilled to host these movies so we can enjoy them together,” Tarantino says of selecting the films from the Columbia Pictures catalogue.

Each will screen on SBS World Movies with conversations between Tarantino and film writer and historian Kim Morgan, looking at how they influenced his work with Once Upon a Time.

The collection kicks off on Monday 12 August with 1969’s Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice,  a comedy starring Natalie Wood, Robert Culp, Elliott Gould and Dyan Cannon, as a free-wheeling couple and their more conservative friends.

Cactus Flower follows on Tuesday 13 August. Hawn plays 21-year-old Toni Simmons, Walter Matthau her middle-aged lover, dentist Julian Winston, who has pretended to be married in order to avoid commitment. His devoted nurse, Stephanie (Ingrid Bergman), who has secretly loved Julian for years, offers to pretend to be his wife.

On Wednesday 14 August, it’s the turn of the 1969 Dennis Hopper-directed classic, Easy Rider, in which Hopper and Peter Fonda play two bike-riding hippies who travel from LA to New Orleans.

Others in the collection include Model Shop (1969); Getting Straight (1970), The Wrecking Crew (1968); Hammerhead (1968), Gunman’s Walk (1958); and Arizona Raiders (1965). (Check the SBS World Movies program guide for screening times).

It’s a fittingly diverse list, given the multiple storylines and talent-studded cast of Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. Margot Robbie headlines alongside DiCaprio and Pitt, while another Australian talent, Damon Herriman makes an appearance as Charles Manson. Al Pacino, Dakota Fanning and Kurt Russell also appear.
