`Til There Was You Review

`Til There Was You is supposed to be a romantic comedy, but it isn`t very funny, and the two people who are supposedly destined for one another spend almost the entire movie apart; it`s a sort of Sleepless In Seattle without the charm. We follow the lives of ghostwriter Gwen - Jeanne Tripplehorn - and architect Nick - Dylan McDermott - from their childhoods through their college years, where they just miss one another, through to adulthood, where Gwen lives in a romantic old apartment building which looks like a faded Melrose Place and is marked for demolition. Gwen becomes active in trying to save La Fortuna, as it`s called, while Nick is designing the redevelopment for owner Francesca Lansfield - Sarah Jessica Parker.... Nick designed the hideous restaurant in the film, so one thing you know is that he must never be allowed to design anything again. `Til There Was You is the first feature film to be directed by Simon Winant who was the supervising producer of the television series Thirtysomething; it was written by Winnie Holzman, another alumnus of Thirtysomething, and amongst the cast you`ll spot Ken Olin, a star of the series. This film just doesn`t come together on any level; Jeanne Tripplehorn is irritating rather than endearing - is she capable of carrying the lead in a film?...maybe not - the same could be said of Dylan McDermott. The screenplay is inane, the dialogue is truly of the appalling variety, the direction is distractingly uneven, the design gob-smackingly awful...is there anything about `Til There Was You to recommend it? - nothing I could find. Half a star - for using celluloid.
