"What is J-pop"

I don’t know how many times I’ve had to answer this question from friends, family, random strangers who talk to me on the train. (It’s the hair. People dig the hair).

The simple answer is “Japanese Pop Music”, but the simple answer is rarely the most correct. “J-Pop” can be so many different things. It can be soulful ballads, upbeat tempos and even a little metal.

Here’s my top 5 songs that ARE ‘J-Pop’.

5. Kyary PamyuPamyu - PONPONPON

From the music video to the lyrics. It’s just so….kawaii!

4. BabyMetal - Give Me Chocolate

Cute, with metal….And chocolate. (A staple in many J-Pop songs. And a necessity in life in general)

3. GACKT - Redemption

Visual Kei and lyrics that just….they’re just so cool it’s like vampires wrote them. And the feels. So many feels.

2. Arashi - Bittersweet

The dance moves. The upbeat tempo. The INCREDIBLY CUTE MEMBERS! /falls.

1. Scandal - Harukaze

This song is what J-Pop is for me. It’s the guitars, the attitude, the ties to anime…

Tell me though, what song sums up J-Pop for you?

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! (Just kidding, you can suggest as many songs as you like).
