The last few years in K-pop have seen the rise of something called the "7 year jinx", which refers to the expiration of group contracts after seven years and the subsequent disbandment of groups. Fans aren't too fond of this "jinx" needless to say, especially after 2016's slate of disbandments, and now there are a new slate of contract renewals for a number of popular groups.
According to a new report, 2017 will see the expiration of contracts for INFINITE, Teen Top, CNBLUE, Girl's Day, and 9MUSES, but it appears that the "7 year jinx" is staying away for each group for now.
INFINITE's contract will expire on June 9, which affords enough time for both the group and their agency Woollim Entertainment to have discussions about a new contract. For the first half of 2017 though, it is reported that each INFINITE member will focus on their own individual activities while leader Sunggyu will be passing on leadership duties to Woohyun in preparation of what is presumed to be his military enlistment.
Things aren't quite as set in stone for Teen Top and 9Muses though. The report states that while Niel will be making a solo comeback this year, it is not yet known whether Teen Top will return as a group. As for 9Muses, the group has had a tough ride since their debut with members coming and going, and it is not yet known whether they will renew their contract.
Things are looking positive for CNBLUE and Girl's Day though, as both groups have recently renewed their contracts with their agencies. While all four CNBLUE members will be focusing on individual activities for the time being, it is reported that Girl's Day are preparing for the release of a new album this year.
What are your thoughts on the contract renewal statuses of each of these groups?
