When the new year comes around every January, most would commemorate the occasion by spending time with their friends and family. But for certain sushi entrepreneurs in Japan, the new year means one thing - ridiculously expensive tuna auctions at Tokyo's famous Tsukiji Fish Market!
The Eat Your Kimchi duo recently heard about some of the new year auctions at the Tsukiji Fish Market and decided to look into it.
For those who are unaware, the Tsukiji Fish Market is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world, and the market's first auction of the new year is a bit of a tradition that usually attracts all the big name restaurant owners and entrepreneurs in Japan. While the fish is undoubtedly fresh (the finest of the first catch of the year), restaurant owners turn up to the auction mainly due to the publicity the event brings towards their businesses.
As for who won the first Tsukiji auction of 2017, it was none other than Japan's self-styled "Tuna King" who has outbid everyone for the past few years, this time paying more than $870,000AUD for a single tuna!
Interestingly, this could potentially be the last Tsukiji new year's auction because there are plans for the market to relocate to a different area in Tokyo. However, this move has since been delayed due to issues regarding soil and drainage problems at the new site, so it remains to be seen what will happen to the future of Tsukiji Fish Market.
