The 44th Annie Awards was recently held to honour excellence in the field of animation throughout 2016, and the event saw a number of big name wins and a few pleasant surprises.

While the "Best Animated Feature" statuette was awarded to Walt Disney's smash hit film "Zootopia", the independent feature "The Red Turtle" managed to take its share of the spotlight by winning the "Best Animated Feature - Independent" award and beating out the heavy favourite "Your Name" in the process.

The first film by a non-Japanese director produced by the renowned Studio Ghibli animation company, "The Red Turtle" has been making a late season awards charge in recent months, managing to score an Academy Award nomination for "Best Animated Feature".

A big congratulations to "The Red Turtle" and all the other winners of the 44th Annie Awards!
