According to Dengeki Online (as translated by AnimeNewsNetwork), Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale has earned over $30 million USD worldwide.
"According to Box Office Mojo's report of the film's success in the Japanese box office, the film earned nearly $4 million USD in its opening week on February 18, and $17 million since its release. The film has become the top selling anime film since Shinkai's Your Name. Crunchyroll reported the film was ranked in several international box offices over its debut weekend, including fourth in Thailand, third in Taiwan and 10th in Korea.
"The earnings figure for Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale in Australia and New Zealand is $467,656 – and that’s only for subtitled only screenings," Jessica McCallum, Head of Social Media and Anime Marketing at Madman told SBS PopAsia. "This also makes it the highest grossing "franchise" film, outside of Dragon Ball, released to date locally."
The film debuted in select Australian theatres on March 9, and a dubbed version is premiering at Madman Anime Festival in Brisbane on June 10. The dub will begin airing in select Australian theatres on June 29.
The movie follows Kirito, Asuna and friends trapped in another virtual MMORPG world. The film is written by the author of the original light novel series, Reki Kawahara and directed by A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Princess, The Idolmaster Movie: Beyond the Brilliant Future!).
Madman’s Anime Festival will hold a special premiere screening of the film, hosted by the English voice of Asuna, Cherami Leigh (Fairy Tail, Soul Eater, Sailor Moon). Cherami joins other superstar guests, the voice of Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Asuka Langley, Yuko Miyamura, cosplayers Ying Tze, Orochi X, Pinky Lu Xun and Katyuska Moonfox. Madman will also be hosting the Australian premiere of Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic.
