Despite courting some controversy before its premiere, Mnet's new reality series Idol School is a big hit.
According to Naver, Thursday's premiere recorded an impressive 2.3 per cent in viewer ratings, beating out the first episodes of both seasons of Produce 101.
Season one of Produce 101 earned 1.04 per cent, while season two opened to 1.638 per cent.
Idol School's PD, Shin Yoo Sun, recently revealed what he believes is the biggest difference between Idol School and Produce 101.
“While Produce 101 is a survival program in which viewers watch how well trainees can do, Idol School is a reality show in which viewers watch ordinary people as they develop," he told MyDaily.
“The biggest difference is that while Produce 101 had prepared trainees, we have ordinary people. There’s also the difference between a survival program and a reality show.”
Idol School features 41 participants, nine of which will be selected to form a new girl group. One of the cast members, Natty, previously competed on JYP Entertainment's Sixteen.
