Last month on September 30, the CEO of the upscale Korean restaurant Hanilkwan was bitten by a neighbour's dog that wasn't on a leash. Subsequent news reports state that the woman passed away due to sepsis six days later, and it was revealed that the dog belonged to Choi Siwon and his family.

In response to the news of the woman's death due to sepsis, the Super Junior member issued out an apology on his Instagram, writing “This is Choi Siwon. I bow my head in apology to the bereaved family, who must be going through great shock and sorrow right now. I feel very apologetic for the incident that our family’s dog was recently involved in. I extend my sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased. As a member of a family raising a dog, I feel a great sense of responsibility. I should’ve kept close supervision at all times, but my carelessness led to a horrible incident and I am deeply reflecting. I will make sure this doesn’t happen again. I apologize for causing trouble. May she rest in peace.

Following Siwon's apology, the family of the deceased have spoken about the incident. A new interview with the co-CEO of Hanilkwan, and older sister of the recently-passed woman, stated that “It’s true that my sister passed away from a secondary infection, along with some other complications, after getting bitten by their dog. However, we decided to forgive them because we were close as neighbors, and loathing them will not bring my sister back.”

She then stated that “My sister’s son and I want to mourn her passing quietly. We don’t plan on taking any legal action against [Choi Siwon’s] family. We don’t want to be compensated. My sister’s son is actually around the same age as Choi Siwon. They’re both young. It’s tragic that my sister passed away, but I don’t want to [ruin] the lives of these young peopleChoi Siwon visited our family several times to apologize. He even cried at the funeral. I held onto his two hands and forgave him.”

In the most recent update, the Seoul Broadcasting System reported on the incident in which CCTV footage of the accident was released. The Korean news outlet reported on the CCTV footage, which depicts Siwon's family dog running through an opening elevator door before biting the victim. This footage reportedly differs from the apology given by Siwon's father, who stated that the dog had slipped through the door while it was open.
