The Ministry of Education in South Korea has cancelled the university degrees of seven idol students.
HIGHLIGHT members Lee Gikwang, Yong Junhyung and Yoon Doojoon, BTOB members Eunkwang and Sungjae, along with Jang Hyunseung and singer Chu Ga Yeoul have had their degrees from Dongshin University cancelled after the Ministry determined special treatment had been given to the celebrities.
According to their investigations, idols' broadcast activities were being counted as being present at university, even if they weren't in the class, as was the department's internal policy. However, there were no written regulations regarding this before 2015, nor were there rules in place to allow departments to manage attendance differently. Therefore, the attendance of students who had been counting broadcast activities, cannot be acknowledged.
Singer Cha Ga Yeoul also acted as an adjunct professor for the Department of Applied Music despite not having a bachelor's degree and while simultaneously studying in the Department of Broadcasting and Entertainment. He hadn't been attending class as the time he was teaching overlapped with when he was supposed to be in lectures as a student. He'll be losing his degree and his position as an adjunct professor.
The university issues a statement saying:
"The university gave grades and degrees according to school and department regulations, but we accept that there were loopholes for parts of the regulations. However, we will closely review measures to protect the graduates who received grades and degrees based on the above regulations so that they will not be harmed as much as possible. We will establish countermeasures including modification of regulations for more thorough academic operations in the future."
