Since their debut in 2015, TWICE has become a major icon of third generation K-pop. They’ve had too many hits to count and continue to grow in popularity with each new release. Considering TWICE’s impact and growth in four short years, we’ve put together a list that charts the JYP Entertainment girl group’s musical evolution from debut until now.
Whether you’re new to TWICE or an all-time ONCE, you might discover a song you haven’t heard before as you travel through time with SBS PopAsia.
The Genre-Bending Phase
"Like OOH-AHH" (2015)
Views to date: 323 million
After winning their positions in the group through the survival program Sixteen, the girls wasted no time with the release of the highly infectious “Like OOH-AHH”. Coupled with a music video which is still the cutest take on a zombie apocalypse, the girls peaked at No.10 on the Korean charts for their debut.
"CHEER UP" (2016)
Views to date: 355 million
Where “Like OOH-AHH” showcased the girls’ maintained cuteness while surrounded by zombies, “CHEER UP” highlighted each member’s personality. From what I can tell, Chaeyoung is a badass cowgirl, Tzuyu is chique and stylish, Momo is a gun slinging warrior, and Dahyun is a princess. What film or genre references did you notice?
Out of This World
“TT” (2016), “Signal” (2017)
Views to date: 479 million, 223 million
After making waves with their debut, TWICE went beyond planet earth with their subsequent music videos for “TT” and “Signal”. Both songs feature out-of-this-world sound effects as they expose us to the wonderful world of magic and aliens.
“Likey” (2017), “Heart Shaker” (2017) “What is Love?” (2018)
Views to date: 407 million, 289 million, 333 million
After taking us to space, TWICE seemed to have found their groove with “Likey”, “Heart Shaker”, and “What is Love?” Each track straddles the same topic: the inescapable feeling of being in love and having your heart flutter uncontrollably. Also, how could anyone forget Dahyun’s heart-stopping “jamkkanman jamkkanman” and Chaeyoung’s rap just before the dance break in “Likey”?
All Class and Very Fancy
“Fancy” (2019), “Feel Special” (2019)
Views to date: 203 million, 53 million
If anything is clear from TWICE in 2019, it’s that they’ve come a long way since their debut. Gone are the days of zombie apocalypses, high school romances, and alien invasions. In “Fancy”, the girls emanate maturity with their matching black outfits. In “Feel Special” too, the members wear luxurious outfits that are less cute and suit their evolution into K-pop’s top girl group.
TWICE has evolved in countless ways since debut and we can only anticipate they will continue to change as the years go on. What’s your favourite TWICE phase? Let us know in the comments below!
